The Saugus Iron Works Great
Adventure
Historic sites can present exciting
adventures for you and your family. Before your visit, a brief research of
the park with the aid of the internet or books from your local library, can
help make your trip more meaningful and enjoyable.
The Saugus Iron Works was started in 1646 and is the oldest iron works
in the United States. Restoration of the site was completed in 1954.
The Iron Works
represents a realistic view of Colonial America. Children and adults can
enjoy history that seems to come alive as they walk the paths of the
iron workers
of the 1600’s.
The Saugus Iron Works Great Adventure was designed as a virtual exploration for children to experience colonial life and investigate how industries in the New World were created to meet the needs of the early settlers. Students also learn about how rocks and minerals and simple machines were used at the Iron Works.
We suggest that local residents use the unit to prepare children for a visit to the Saugus Iron Works park. Guided tours, programs, and other activities are available at the Saugus Iron Works. This site gives information about the Iron Works and other historic areas in Massachusetts. http://www.nps.gov/sair.
