In this lesson you will learn more about the role that Irish immigrants played in the industrialization of Lowell, Massachusetts. What types of jobs did Irish immigrants hold? What are some of the problems, attitudes and barriers faced by immigrants? What tensions resulted as the number of Irish grew?

You will analyze political cartoons and newspaper accounts, which illustrate the difficulties faced by immigrants between the 1830's through the 1860's.

As a class you will view a PowerPoint presentation as an introduction to the development of Lowell as a center for manufacturing. This PowerPoint presentation includes graphs that breakdown the textile labor force by sex, age, and nationality. The presentation will also include the growth of anti-Irish sentiment during the 1800's.
