Introduction |
Have you ever been an immigrant? An immigrant is a person who leaves oe country to settle permanently in another. (http://www.answers.com/topic/immigrant). Well, today you're going to start an exploration where you will become not one, but two immigrants. Through this exploration you will look at the role that immigrants played in the industrialization in Massachusetts.
In the early 1800's almost two-thirds of the people living in Massachusetts lived in small rural towns. Life centered around the farm. Then the Industrial Revolution started in Massachusetts. Factories and mills opened, allowing more job opportunities for everyone. This drew people from their rural life to a more industrial life in the city of Lowell. In this lesson ou will imagine yourself as two immigrants arriving in Boston during different years. In one exploration, you will be an immigrant arriving from England in 1820. You are twenty years old and you've been promised a job on your cousin's farm in Chelmsford, Massachusetts. In the second exploration you are an Irish immigrant arriving from Ireland in 1850. You have heard from relatives of yours in America and they have promised that you will secure a job working in the Boott Mill in Lowell, Massachusetts.
