| The 19th Century featured the development and growth of many forms of transportation. The Middlesex Canal provided the transportation connection between Boston and Lowell during the early part of the nineteenth century. During that time, it successfully linked Boston Harbor with the Merrimack River and allowed for traffic of people and goods from the capital of Massachusetts northward to Lowell. |

| Throughout most of the 1800's, railroads brought about widespread economic development in the United States. In Massachusetts, specifically, railroads played a major role in the growth and development of the textile industry in Massachusetts, as exemplified by the rise of the mills in Lowell in the early 1800's, as well as important changes for Massachusetts' towns, cities, people, and economy throughout the nineteenth century. |
