"Those who expect to reap the blessings of freedom must, like men, undergo the fatigue of supporting it."    -- Tom Paine

You should realize that life in colonial Boston in the 1760s and 1770s was not easy on anyone. All Bostonians were forced to choose between the lives they knew in the British Empire or a new life filled with uncertainty. Loyalty to Great Britain meant protection from a powerful ally, but isolation from the majority of Boston colonists. Colonists may have been swayed by propaganda, but whatever they chose there were consequences to their decision that affected their daily lives and the lives of those around them.

There have been many times in our country that our people have faced difficult decisions. Individuals, supporting different perspectives, have come together as one people for the good of our country. In the days and years ahead you will be asked to examine issues and make decisions. Will you be swayed by others, or will you weigh different perspectives and support a decision that you feel is for the good of the majority?
