To Sign Or Not To Sign?...That Is Your Decision! |

Activity Four |
| As a Boston merchant you are expected to announce your decision about the nonimportation agreement at a Boston Town Meeting at Faneuil Hall. |
| You will prepare a two-minute speech in which you will: |
- Give 3 to 4 reasons explaining your decision. Use the “To Sign or Not To Sign” worksheet and also consider the following questions:
- What are your vital interests? Taking care of yourself or your colony?
- What tensions exist between your individual interests and the interests of the colony?
- How can you balance your individual liberties with the greater good?
- What motivates you as a shop owner: economics or political ideas?
- What do you think the role of the government should be in the colonies?
- Describe how your decision will affect your business. (What plans do you have for the future?)
- Analyze the impact of your decision on your position in the colonies. (How will Patriots and Loyalists view you?)
- Use primary source documents to support the arguments in your speech.
- Remember to remain in character as a Boston merchant whose entire life will be altered by the decision.

A hard copy of the speech must be submitted to the teacher in addition to your speech delivery. For helpful hints on how to write and deliver a speech, visit www.speechtips.com. |
