Tensions Run Over: Boston Massacre Mock Trial

Basic Trial Procedures

  1. Bailiff calls the court to order; Judge enters.

  2. Judge asks each side to present their opening statements.

  3. Judge asks prosecution to call its first witness; bailiff swears the witness in. After the prosecuting attorneys are done with their witness, the judge will ask defense attorneys to cross-examine the witness. This is repeated for each witness for the prosecution.

  4. Judge asks defense to call its first witness; bailiff swears the witness in. After the defense attorneys are done with their witness, the judge will ask prosecuting attorneys to cross-examine the witness. This is repeated for each witness for the defense.

  5. Judge asks each side for their closing statements.

  6. Jury deliberates.

  7. When jury reaches a verdict, the judge will ask the jury for the verdict. The jury announce its verdict.

  8. Court is adjourned.
