PROCESS

You will be separated into three groups. Each group will be responsible for reading a document on antebellum American slavery, antebellum factory labor in Lowell, Massachusetts, or slavery in Ancient Rome. Each group will then present their analysis of the document to the class.
As a group, you will be responsible for answering the slavery question and answer worksheet. Read the document “Conditions of Antebellum Slavery” on the Africans in America website. Choose ONE of the related entries at the bottom of the web page to read. This will give you an idea of the role slavery has played in American history.

Then, read selections from “To Be A Slave” and pages 1–4, and 97–105 in “Slavery and Bondage Throughout History”. You will have an opportunity to discuss the selections with a group of three other students.

After the discussion, your group will fill out a two-column chart that details your questions about slavery. We will then complete a class question and answer session. The goal is to address and answer any questions that you may have as a class.

Using the resources listed above and at the bottom of the page, complete the Slavery Question and Answer worksheet.
  1. Describe how and why slavery was used in the American South during the antebellum period.
  2. Describe how and why slavery was used in Ancient Rome.
  3. Describe three differences and three similarities between slavery in the antebellum American South, and slavery in Ancient Rome.
