Ellen Craft

PROCESS

We will examine some of the many aspects in which Boston served as a major center in the Abolitionist movement by:
  • reading about William and Ellen Craft, two slaves who escaped bondage and devoted their lives to abolishing slavery.
  • learning about Lewis Hayden, whose home served as a safe house on the Underground Railroad.
  • understanding some risks Abolitionists took in assisting slaves.
  • realizing the impact of the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850.
