The Task |
| Your task is to read and interpret primary source documents and analyze the roles of Garrison and Douglass in the abolitionist movement. |
You will write a short biographical sketch of each man and determine what events in their past contributed to their divergent ideas regarding how slavery should be abolished. |
You will examine and analyze articles from two abolitionist newspapers, the Liberator and the North Star , as well as speeches by Garrison and Douglass, to determine the specific actions each man believed the country needed to take in order to end slavery. |
You will read a modern explanation of selected Articles in the Constitution and fill in a worksheet outlining the major sections that deal with the slavery issue. |
You will engage in a debate with your classmates in which you support the views of either Garrison or Douglass regarding how slavery should be abolished. You will cite historical references to defend your position and form an opinion as to whether Douglass or Garrison's approach was more effective in ending slavery. |
