THE TASK |
You will use websites, primary source documents, broadsides, maps, and newspaper articles to help understand the sectional tensions created as a result of the arrest and trial of Anthony Burns. Each group of students will complete the analysis of several primary source documents. You will have to do research using the Internet, and have the option of creating a PowerPoint presentation or a timeline as a form of assessment. You will demonstrate your comprehension of the Anthony Burns case by writing a letter to the editor of “The Liberator”. You may express support for the actions taken by the federal government, or justify the measures taken by Boston’s abolitionists in defense of Anthony Burns. You will use the following essential questions as a guide during this process:
- “How did Americans imagine their natural rights?”
- “How did they attempt to institutionalize these rights into law?”
-
“What were the effects of this institutionalization on the disenfranchised?”
