The Task

In this lesson you will investigate events like historians: looking at websites, book excerpts, maps, and other documents that will help you to understand what it may have been like to have lived on or near Beacon Hill around 1850, and what it was like to be a black student in that time period. Then, using this information, each team of five students will complete one project, which will explore what led up to the court case of Roberts vs. the City of Boston, and what happened during and after the proceedings.  Finally, each team will present their project to the whole class so that everyone can share what each of you learned.

In fifth grade you studied about slavery and how different life was for former or escaped slaves who lived as free people in the north compared with life as a slave in the south.  In Boston some blacks had college educations, and some even had businesses, which was very unusual in the south.  Black Bostonians supported themselves and felt they deserved to be treated the same as any other person.
