Introduction |
Long ago there were no power boats, no aluminum light-weight fishing rods with fancy lures to hook the "big one". If early Native Americans wanted to eat fish that night, they could not go to the local supermarket and see what was in the seafood department. They had no choice but to fish in the way they knew how-with a fish weir! A fishing weir is an ancient type of fish trap. We will put ourselves in the moccasins of those early fishermen and discover how and why they developed the fish weir.
Our exploration into the community life of Native Americans will investigate how they used natural resources. Native Americans believed that natural resources were to be shared by all and not owned by any one. The European settlers had a different way of life that included ownership of land and resources. We will explore life in Eastern Massachusetts before the arrival of European Settlers. |
