The Task

Task #1. Students will first watch a video which summarizes the experience of the Christian “Praying Indians” of Natick, who were forced to live on Deer Island during King Philip’s War. Students will then use a period map of Massachusetts and a current map to create a route from Natick to Deer Island that includes direction, distance, and modes of transportation. Students will then write a diary entry of their experience traveling to and living on Deer Island.

Task #2. Students will use two digitized primary sources (“Lyst [List] of the Indian Children” and also the “Indian Children Bound” chart) to locate information regarding Native American child servants. Students will then use this information to write a poem.

Task #3. Students will write a journal account based upon a 1668 digitized disposition concerning Captain Walker and his purchase of a Native American boy.

Task #4. Students will read several digitized advertisements for Native American slaves. They will then write a “Letter to the Editor” for one of the newspapers.
